Tapas Tratro : Indie Class

So its been awhile since my last post but I've been thinking hard about my next good dining experience. I started to think about places where I've felt some what classy. A place where the feeling of artistic and modern meet with downtown night life. I first came upon Tapas Teatro when I was trying to impress a girl that I liked by trying to go outside my own comfort zone. I had been looking for romantic and low lighted place to have a nice time. So I did some research during my Bio class, barely hearing something about ribosomes. After two incorrectly answered questions and one awkward stare from the teacher, I found my place.

Tapas is a a very common in the Spanish cuisine varying in types but constant on small snack and appetizer sizes. In today's culture tapas have evolved into a sort of sophisticated type of cuisine with a bit of intellectual conversation thrown in. With tapas the sense of conversation is strongly encouraged since people aren’t entirely focused on the food in front of them, in other words its like going to a sports bar with some friends and getting some beer and wings except instead of beer a nice Tempranillo and instead of wings you get cured cheese with anchovies on top and lets take away the TV with the baseball game on and insert people conversing on politics. Tapas Tratro offers the that experience.

Located on Charles St. in almost downtown Baltimore, next to the independent local movie house Charles Theater. The restaurant is bustling with people as you walk in the sounds of various conversations and mingling covers the wall. The decor shows that it has a sense of style while not being pretentious. My advice for getting a good table, get there early, Tapas doesn’t take reservations, so its come early and get seated or come late and sit at the cramp bar (where at least you can get a nice glass of sangria), but there is always the reclining seats in the awning of the Charles Theater. After getting seating for which felt like a few years we were led to a a very small table (which for being ‘6’’1 is kinda small) with our neighbors literally 5 inches away from us ( i guess to introduce conversation).

Any thing i was holding negatively towards Tapas quickly disappeared when i saw the waiter approached us with freshly baked bread, with the steam still visible. We stared of the night with an order of Albondigas which are lamb meatballs in the style of Sevilla with toasted almonds and cilantro, we also ordered Grilled Lamb Chops which char-grilled, marinated lamb chops with rhubarb barbecue sauce. The hearty albondigas were cooked nicely to the point where you could taste all the flavors coming out with each bite. The only thing i can say about the lamb chops is that in my last will and testament i would like a plate of that next to my grave, my deliciousness. Pulpo a la Gallega (Octopus the Galician Way), was made in its own ink, which i thought gave it its unique flavor and texture.

If only i had been 21 at the time I would of ordered a glass of their sangria (which would of topped off this dinner perfectly), which i have heard from reliable sources that it is quite delicious. So basically here it is, grab 4 or 5 people close friends, grab a table at Tapas Teatro order some sangria and wine, order food and leave your phones in your pockets or purses because this is not the place for it, pick a movie playing at the Charles Theatre late in the evening or find a cool band playing at the Ottobar, and that's show you do it.

Golden West Cafe (a.k.a Hipster Hole in the Wall)

I first visited Golden West with my girlfriend, Kat, on a snowy day in early February. One thing you notice first when you enter Golden West is the oddities found upon the wall such as a giant moose head hanging right above your table. As you're greeted by the host, dressed with a buttoned down flannel, skinny jeans, and well worn converse hi-tops,( not to forget the countless piercings and tattoos) you can clearly tell your going to have a very relaxed evening.
One of the things that I really enjoy about the restaurant is the nonchalant atmosphere, even at peak dinner hours the restaurant doesn't have dozens of people waiting to seated, overcrowded patrons, or blaring obnoxious music. On the contrary its easy to just walk right in get a table and get served in a matter of minutes.  When our waiter handed us our 50's themed menu, I started too peruse looking for something tasty and filling. One of the things that quickly caught my eye was a Bison Burger, a burger that up until then I have never found the opportunity to try. When the burger came out, it looked divine. The patty had a thin crust with tasty bits of char, and a warm, juicy center with a good amount of pink. The sunny-side up egg's yolk ran down the burger adding the extra 'something'  to make it AMAZING. The lean bison meat didn't gush forth with juice like most beef-based burgers, but it was plenty moist and had just as much flavor, similar to grass-fed beef. Although the flavor was rich and savory, it didn't taste heavy like most half-pounders. The superior quality of the meat and excellent grilling technique were matched by toppings with bold, complimentary flavors. Working together, the toppings brought sharp flavors to the burger, without any one ingredient overpowering the others. Some roughage—lettuce, onion, tomato, and a pickle spear—were served alongside the burger, but I decided to leave them off to fully appreciate the combo of meat + cheese +egg+ heat. Of course you can always opt out and order of their extensive vegetarian menu (which is really their entire menu). Golden west also features live music and events, lots of local promotion and of course, a lengthy micro-brew list along with the classic drinks. (bloody marys are apparently the bomb there)
Overall, smushed inside of Hampden, Golden West is an eclectic gem able to satisfy all types of diners. Meat lovers, vegetarians, and even vegans can find fresh, local and well made food. Let me put it this way, a room full of 6 girls including:  a liberal hippie, conservative carnivore, and the dreaded picky eater, can all  agree that Golden west is a go to place for a night out.

I'm Always Hungry

This is my first post on my first blog. So as you can tell its about food, lots and lots of food. I love to go out and eat food at some local restaurants, along with the regular chain restaurants. I will mainly talk about restaurants in Maryland but I have some favorites from my travels in the south. Hopefully I will be adventuring to certain restaurants around the world during the holidays. So I'll be covering places like Irish Pubs, 5 Star Restaurants, Hole-in-Wall places, and of course as a college student "after hour" places. As always take your time and enjoy what you eat.
